The much awaited Delhi-Gurugram-Dwarka Expressway is expected to be completed within one year from now, an official said on Wednesday, February 12, 2020. Confirming the news, a senior official of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), informed that 30 per cent of this expressway has already been completed. The four construction companies to whom the contracts pertaining to the construction of the project have been awarded have to follow a strict timeline.

Four Packages

The 16 lane state of the art expressway, starting from the Delhi Gurugram at Shiv Murti and going all the way to Kherki Dhaula toll plaza via Dwarka Sector 21, Gurugram border and Basai has been divided into into four packages. The first package starts from Shiv Murti to Dwarka Sector 21 covering 5.3 km, the second package is 4.2 km from Dwarka Sector 21 to the Gurugram border, the third package is from the Gurugram border to Basai flyover having distance of 10.2 km and the fourth package from Basai to Kherkidhaula on National Highway (NH) 8.

An 18.9 km stretch of the expressway falls under Gurugram, while the remaining 9.5 km falls under the territories of Delhi. The foundation stone of the expressway was laid on 8 March, 2019, by Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari followed by a 10 year of delay.

Reasons for Delay

According to an official, “The project of the Dwarka expressway has been delayed due to non-acquisition of land in Delhi. The overall cost of the project is Rs 7,500 crore and offers signal-free convenient travelling experience to commuters who can reach from one point to another in 20 to 25 minutes. It will remove the traffic burden of existing Delhi-Gurugram expressway”.

The initial concept of the 6-lane 18 km long expressway connecting NH 8 at Kherki Dhaula with Delhi’s suburb of Dwarka came into the forefront in 2007 and its construction started in 2009 with a completion time of 36 months. However, the project was delayed due to land acquisition issues in Gurugram faced by the Haryana Shahari Vikash Pradhikaran, and in Delhi faced by the Sheila Dixit and Arvind Kejriwal governments.

To Boost Connectivity in Gurgaon and NCR

The is developing as a hub for commercial and entertainment activities and is amongst the most preferred locations to stay in the NCR region, with its proximity to Gurgaon and link to Delhi-Noida. After completion, it will provide faster access to the airport; connect close to the 100-metre-wide road proposed in the new master plan, and the areas will also have seamless connectivity with the proposed diplomatic enclave and the existing metro corridor. Another strategic development that could reduce congestion in Palam Vihar, Bijwasan, sector 22, 23, 21 would be the completion of Bajghera flyover, which will allow easy access between Dwarka Expressway and NH-48.

Boon for Real Estate

The development of the Dwarka Expressway will certainly be a boon for the real estate sector and facilitate in the overall development of the Gurgaon region in the long run. As per the Gurgaon Master Plan-2021, the area around Dwarka Expressway will assuredly become the new centre of realty development in New Gurgaon. Sectors near the expressway are Sectors 99-113, 83 and 84. There will be a commercial belt touching Sectors 105, 106, 109, 110, 110A, 111, 112 and 113 with Sectors 100 and 101 being used for public utilities. The popularity of the area has seen many reputed names of the real estate industry entering the market of this expressway.
