In a recent development, a big sigh of relief for the residents of Palam Vihar & its nearby localities as the Bajghera Flyover & underpass constructed over Delhi-Revari railway line will be opened for traffic on 18 August 2019. Public Works Department confirmed this on Sunday post their joint visit to the site with Officials from Indian Railways.
Chandra Mohan, superintending engineer, PWD, said, “We have finished 95% work till date and our men are working day and night to finish the remaining 5% before August 15 so that the flyover and the underpass can be inaugurated on August 18.”
The commencement of construction for this flyover & underpass was done by Public Works Department (PWD) in December 2016 with a completion deadline of December 18. But due to the construction activities the local and inter-city traffic between Delhi and Gurugram, via Bajghera railway crossing, was blocked and diverted towards Daulatabad flyover and the Chauma railway crossing. The traffic movement was severely affected due to this blockage & diversion. As the Chauma railway crossing was manually manages during this period & the traffic of local areas situated on both side of the Delhi-Gurgaon-Rewari railway line, such as Palam Vihar, New Palam Vihar, Ashok Vihar, Sector 110-A, 115, Mahindra Aura and sectors 21, 22, 23, struggled to cross it.
This flyover is jointly constructed by two Government bodies. The approach roads are constructed by Public Works Department (PWD), while the central portion of the underpass & flyover was constructed by the Indian Railways. The government was under tremendous pressure from local residents & to release this pressure announcement of opening of underpass for traffic on 30 June 2019 was made by the PWD and the Indian Railways.
As the Indian Railways has completed construction of their part, now the focus will be on state government run PWD to complete the construction of approach road & open it for traffic.
The residents of the area hope that opening of flyover & underpass will bring an end to their daily hardships & harassment. They have been waiting eagerly for the opening of the flyover and the underpass since almost 3 years. According to one of the residents in New Palam Vihar “After the Bajghera railway crossing was blocked, we crossed the railway line at Chauma near DPSG School at Palam Vihar. The Chauma railway crossing is manually managed by the Indian Railways and approach road on both side of the railway line is full of knee-deep potholes. It is terrible to cross this railway line and commute through potholed approach roads, but we have no other option,”.
The underpass is meant for light vehicles, such as cars, jeeps, auto-rickshaws, etc. It is 45-meter long and only two cars can pass at one time. This underpass was planned for a better and hassle-free movement of traffic. Since the concentration of cyclists, two-wheeler, rickshaw pullers, hawkers, etc is very high, the over-bridge is not convenient at all.
The underpass opening is likely to bring relief to commuters travelling between Palam Vihar and New Palam Vihar through the Bajghera railway crossing, which was blocked in December 2016 for the construction of a railway over-bridge and the underpass. However, we should also keep in mind that the underpass is meant for light vehicles, such as cars, jeeps, auto-rickshaws, etc. It is 45-meter long and only two cars can pass at one time. This underpass was planned for a better and hassle-free movement of traffic. Since the concentration of cyclists, two-wheeler, rickshaw pullers, hawkers, etc is very high, the over-bridge is not convenient at all. So the construction was underpass was done to avoid the congestion at the flyover.
