According to the sources, it has been confirmed that the Road Transport Minister, Nitin Gadkari asked NHAI authorities to take up “Delhi-Mumbai Expressway” project on priority so that logistic movements between Delhi to Mumbai could not be hampered. The project initiated on 8 March 2019. Nitin Gadkari confirmed that a deadline has been set for this project which would be 26 January 2023. The minister added that for him this project would be as prestigious as Mumbai-Pune expressway.

An NHAI official informed that the work that has been allotted for the expressway is 40% rest 50% is for the underway. The official added that the project has to be completed in the given frame of time so as to set an example. The official gave little information about the project and added that the expressway would have 8 lanes and the procurement is to expand it to 12 keeping in mind the future traffic growths. The project aims in cut travel time in half reaching Mumbai to Delhi in nearly 12 hours.

43 interchanges in intersections with major state and national highways will be constructed. In every 50 km, 73 wayside amenities would be provided which people could easily find after 4-50 minutes of driving. These amenities would consist of the convenience store, food courts, dormitories, helipad and fuel stations. This would not only ensure a good road experience but also boost the employment level at another level.

The 1290-km-long access-controlled expressway will pass through Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Another official of NHAI said that they are going to ensure that zero disturbance is caused to Ranthambore National Park. He added, 3 animal underpasses of the combined length of 4.5 km will be constructed along with the 5-underground stretch of 2.5 km combined length. The underground road stretch would make sure that there could be no conflict between traffic and animals.

These are some insights into the project “Delhi-Mumbai Expressway” which is to be completed in the year 2023. It would hardly take 4 years for its completion and would facilitate roadways generations after generations. The Minister added that he also had a dream to convert the expressway into an “electric highway” like those in the European countries with buses and trucks running with electric cables. The highway will act as growth engine for the areas through which it passes as logistics parks and smart cities will also be developed.
