The National Capital Region Transport Corporation has started pre-construction activity with Geotechnical investigation on the Delhi – Gurugram – SNB – RRTS Corridor. One of the key projects of NCRPB is the development of Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), connecting Delhi with key cities in NCR region. The RRTS project is expected to facilitate quick commute for passengers between Delhi and NCR towns. The RRTS trains are projected to have a design speed of 180 kmph and with high acceleration and deceleration.
National Capital Region Planning Board has identified eight corridors for rail-based high-speed commuter transit system, including:
- Delhi – Gurgaon – Rewari – Alwar [DGRA – Project Corridor]
- Delhi – Ghaziabad – Meerut
- Delhi – Sonipat – Panipat
- Delhi – Faridabad – Ballabhgarh – Palwal
- Delhi – Bahadurgarh – Rohtak
- Delhi – Shahadra – Baraut
- Ghaziabad – Khurja
- Ghaziabad – Hapur
The Haryana Cabinet approved the corridor earlier this year. The corridor will allow people to travel from Delhi to Alwar via Gurgaon and Rewari in less than two hours once the project completed. The 106 km-long corridor project is expected to be complete in 5 years’ time excluding one year of pre-construction activities. The corridor will be elevated for about 71 km, the remaining 35 km will be underground, mostly in Delhi & Gurugram. 11 station on the corridor will be elevated while 5 will be constructed underground. It will converge with other RRTS corridors in Sarai Kale Khan facilitating commuters’ movement from one corridor to another without having to change trains. Other stations include Jor Bagh, Munirka and Aerocity. All these stations will seamlessly connect to Delhi Metro, Hazrat Nizamudin Railway station, Inter State Bus Terminal and other modes of transport.

The trains will be available at a frequency of every 5-10 minutes. These trains will be air-conditioned with transverse seating and overhead luggage space. A coach would be reserved exclusively for women, and priority seating arrangements would be made for people with special needs. A business class coach would also be available in every train. These trains are expected to have nine coaches. The daily ridership on this corridor is estimated to be 8.5 Lakhs in 2025.
The NCRPB has decided to implement RRTS in the following three corridors on priority:
- Delhi – Gurgaon – Rewari – Alwar;
- Delhi – Sonipat – Panipat; and
- Delhi – Ghaziabad – Meerut
Once these lines are operational, commuting in Gurgaon will become much easier. The Delhi – Gurugram – SNB high speed network will commence at Sarai Kale Khan reaching Areocity within 15 minutes. Moreover, travelling time from Areocity to Rajiv Chowk will be reduced to 15 minutes. The airport will be just 10 minutes away from Rajiv Chowk and people from Manesar will be able to reach T3 Terminal in 20 minutes. This corridor aims to cut the travel time of the commuters along with avoiding traffic snarls and pollution on the busy roads of Delhi NCR. There will be three RRTS stations in Gurugram – Udyog Vihar, Sector 17 and Rajiv Chowk.
Property in Gurgaon both commercial as well as residential will get a boost with greater connectivity resulting in more footfalls from the commuters. Industrial towns beyond Gurugram have witnessed a rapid growth in housing in the last few years but lack a convenient mode of transport. This high speed network will fill this gap and boost connectivity between Delhi, Gurgaon, Rewari, Manesar, Daruheda, Bawal, and nearby areas.
Once constructed, the corridor is expected to bring down the travel time between Delhi-SNB to about 70 minutes. The fast commute will connect Delhi to nearby regions and will be immensely beneficial in de-congesting Delhi and NCR, providing citizens the choice to live and work in different regions. This corridor will not only offer mass transit benefits but also bring in the wide range of economic benefits, including effectively curbing pollution, improving safety and reliability of commute and creating employment as well as new economic opportunities.
